There are stories of Japanese emperors having Koi for generations. There are
even unsubstantiated accounts of Koi living for 200 years. Koi along with
other outdoor goldfish (comets and shubunkin) have proven to be extremely
hearty and beautiful, and make wonderful pets for a water garden.

Goldfish tips:
- All goldfish, regardless of type, require
a larger then normal amount of oxygen. Make sure to prepare for this
thru adequate filtration and circulation.
- Goldfish are vegetarian by nature. Proper
food should be given.
- Goldfish are "greedy" eaters
and can easily consume too much food and contaminate their own water
environment. Also feed your fish only the amount of food then can consume
in a few minutes. Food left floating on the top or sinking at the bottom
leads to organic waste that will rapidly deteriorate their water.
- If you plan on keeping your goldfish
in a bowl (keep in mind many will grow too large for this, i.e. Koi
and comets) remember the lack of filtration will require you to change
their water weekly.
- Most ornamantle goldfish can live to
the age of 30 years. Unfortunately this isn't often seen due to poor
water quality as a result of improper feeding

Ornamental goldfish make great pets for both
the beginner and well experienced aquarium keeper. The most common types sold
are Fantails, (named for the broad fins) Orandas, (many of which have been
bred for show) and Ryukins (known for their curved back and lack of tissue
on top of head).

The Wonderful World of Goldfish
Koi
Goldfish
have been one of the most popular and loved species of fish for centuries.
We felt them important enough to devote an entire page to these personable,
colorful fish. Whether they live in a small bowl or a 20,000 gallon
pond these fun fish are smart, colorful and REALLY ENJOY EATING.
Koi
are offered in many varieties; domestic and imported, solid and multi (tri)
colored, butterfly and standard tail, just to name a few. Prices can range
from inexpensive to extremely expensive (in excess of $10,000.00 in some specific
bloodlines). The main diet is vegetable matter. Plant life such as Anacharis
provides both a good nutritional source but also provides a excellent oxygen
source.
